How to help save your mobile phone from water damage

October 19th, 2017

Although there are steps you can take to protect water damage from occurring in the first place, many of us have seen our devices negatively impacted by coming into contact with water despite our best efforts. Thankfully, the good news is that your handset won’t necessarily be a goner even if water damage has occurred and you don’t have one of the latest state-of-the-art waterproof mobiles. Read on for more information about what to do if your phone has come into contact with water and its future is in jeopardy.

You can use waterproof pouches and other solutions to protect your phone from the worst, but if this point has been passed, you may still be able to save it. If your phone is dropped in water, make sure you rescue it immediately, as its chances of survival will continue to fall the longer it is immersed in it. Do not switch your phone on or plug it in once you have rescued it from water. If it is still on, remove power by shutting it down or taking out the battery. You then need to move it to a safe, preferably flat surface. Paper towels can absorb some of the water, so you may wish to place it on them.

Other things you need to avoid if your phone has been dunked in water include pressing keys, shaking the handset, blowing into it, applying heat to it or moving it around excessively. You need to keep movement to a minimum as this can cause water to move around inside the handset and cause further damage. You should remove items that are easy to detach like SIM, SD cards and batteries. You should only remove other components if you are tech expert and truly know what you’re working with.

You can also try to dry the outside of the phone gently with a paper towel, or use a vacuum cleaner to draw water from the phone. Again, you will need to do this very carefully so the device is not moved around too much. After this, you will need to leave the phone alone without touching it for at least 2-3 days. You can leave it in a drawer or on surface, but leaving it in a bag of rice for 2-3 days can speed up the drying process, with the rice drawing the moisture from the phone. Rice is a good solution as it absorbs humidity from the air, and packs of silica gel can also be helpful.

Once the days have passed, you will need to put the phone back together, plug it in and switch it on. If it doesn’t work, you may wish to leave it a little longer. If this still doesn’t work, you may need to consult the professionals.
